Letterboxd Year in Review Title Image

We’re here to become human again. To become all we imagine and more than we were programmed to be. To live life forwards, even while we look back.

We see possible futures, all at once, in the ghost light. So we draw closer to the TV’s glow, going with the flow of family life, of grandmas and daughters, hit men and fall guys, learning to defy gravity, Anxiety
 and brutalist beavers.

Let the white smoke rise—we have our winners. Or, in the words of Tashi Duncan: COME ON!

Please enjoy our thirteenth annual retrospective. (Your personalized summary is here!)

Dune: Part TwoDune: Part Two (2024)

1 Dune: Part Two

“An absolute behemoth of a film. My goodness. The entire third act is some of the most goosebump-inducing filmmaking I’ve ever seen. I can’t stress enough the intensity of the emotions I feel while watching this. It’s truly an experience I’ll cherish forever.” — George Carmi

Average weighted rating: 4.4

I'm Still Here

2 I’m Still Here

“May we never forget the dark past we lived through, may we never forget the many voices cruelly silenced by hands that, even today, remain unpunished. And finally, may we remember: even the faintest smile can be the thread of hope that guides us through the labyrinths of despair.” — gabe lisbîa

Average weighted rating: 4.3

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

3 How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

“For anyone who’s ever lost someone they didn’t get to love fully, this film doesn’t just break you, it reveals that the truest wounds lie not in the act of losing but in the moments that slipped away unnoticed
Most importantly, I’d say give your grandparents a good hug after watching. :)” — neil

Genre Winners

As The Substance director Coralie Fargeat says, genre allows us to go outside of reality and be in a world where the rules are different.

Cinema’s strange darlings in 2024 included fur trappers, Irish rappers and Wasteland whippersnappers. In an Olympic year of sweaty body-building and acrobatic action, we also refereed a special sports top ten.

Apresentando: your genre winners. đŸŽŸ

Women Directors

Among those who helmed our 50 highest-rated narrative films, eight women were in the director’s chair. Indian women filmmakers especially lit up our screens and imaginations in 2024.

Eight is a drop from last year’s fourteen, which included Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar Barbie. We don’t like to see women and gender-expansive storytellers put back in the box, so here’s where we can pull the focus on some underrepresented artists.

And now for our women of the hour

Intermission

Before it ends, before we run out of time, our editorial team would like to celebrate some of our greatest days of 2024.

Between Marty and Leo in our most watched YouTube video and the wickedly talented ensemble in our most viewed TikTok, you took pride in our most liked tweet on X, and lapped up four faves on IG from besties like Denis, Emma, Olivia, Snoop, Pedro, the French lawyers and Team Godzilla. (Zendaya, call us.)

Our most read Journal stories saw naughty lists, M. Night rankings and search parties float your boat. We also danced with Awāra, booked a private with Michael Mann, embraced closed captions and took a class in audio commentaries. Plus, hand-picked recommendations new and old, year-round.

Break’s over—back to the floor. đŸȘ©

Hard Truths

Brandon Streussnig

[

Completely bowled over by this. Every burst of anger or humor flattened by the silence that comes from having to exist like this, having to live with pain you simply cannot communicate. Marianne Jean-Baptiste with the performance of the year? Decade? Life? A remarkable exercise in screen acting, taking up the frame early, larger than life until the rage and pain consumes her and she just shrinks and shrinks, even her face seemingly swallowing itself. It’s fucking NUTS. A giant.

Twisters

Reyna Cervantes

[

I’ll be honest. I was a doubter/hater. But then I saw Twisters in 4DX. While Twisters is the prime example of the braindead summer blockbuster, I can’t help but be charmed in the moment by its portrayal of Americana. When it’s not trying to justify its uses of semi-real scientific explanations, Twisters relishes grabbing the bull by the horns and riding out the storm. Twisters does something a lot of big blockbusters forget to do: it has fun! Never have I wanted to YEE HAW more in a movie.

Love Lies Bleeding

Ana V

[

Somewhere in the world, David Cronenberg and Julia Ducournau are smiling simply because this film exists. Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding is a neon-infused, surrealist, daydream of a film in which love and violence are so intertwined that you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. When Richard Siken wrote “I’m sorry about the blood in your mouth, I wish it was mine” I can only imagine this was the type of feeling he was trying to evoke, a passion so guttural, so all-consuming that it makes one bleed and draw blood for the sake of others. Glass finds sensuality in the grotesque, beauty in the horror, and a tender connection in the midst of brutality that gives the characters the strength they need to break free and run away together. Perhaps not into the sunset, but into the starry, desert night.

Interstellar

✿bea✿

[

Watching my dad’s and [my] favorite movie in IMAX with him was such a special experience. I started crying before anything had even happened because I already felt the weight of the grief that this movie holds
I don’t think there’s anything more beautiful than the idea that a father’s love for his daughter is so powerful that it literally transcends space and time, saving her and the rest of the human race. Because, of course, he promised her.

A Woman Under the Influence

Marisa Cerasoli

[

Gena Rowlands’ performance here is lyrical. Every peculiar micro expression, every movement, every flicker of vulnerability—her facial features perpetually arranged as though she could begin sobbing at any moment. Mabel’s life is lived in bursts—whirlwinds of pain and confusion at her husband’s neglect and contradictions, an abundance of emotion that just has nowhere to go but to come up to the surface—and every molecule of it manifests in Rowlands’ face. If she is anywhere to be seen in the frame, you can’t help but fix your eyes on her. When she’s not on screen, you’re wishing she was. The hard pill to swallow is that Mabel is hardly any more insane than Nick. God forbid a woman be filled with untameable whimsy! At no point does this feel like watching a movie. This is complete immersion in something real.

Seven Samurai

Juror #2

Tyler Whitmore

[

Movie so tense it had me questioning if I was guilty for crimes I never even committed. Clint Eastwood at 94 years old still has the ability to throw an absolute heater down the middle of the plate. A masterclass of tension and guilt. A fascinating look into power and the lengths people go to acquire and protect it. A modern-day trolley problem
Chris Messina shows up and I let out an audible “hell yeah”.

Heretic

Rachel Syme

[

I agree with everyone that deploying Hugh Grant’s nuclear charm in a horror direction is a
fun stunt! He’s just a boy, standing in front of two girls, asking if he can kill them. The whole trick of this movie is that Nobody Could Ever Find Hugh Scary When He Is Such A Doddering Moppet and well
that’s a big mistake, girls! Huge! Never believe that just because a man offers you blueberry pie he doesn’t have a giant murder maze in his house!!!

Babygirl

dominique

[

What makes this work, instead of following traditional narrative conventions, is the non-judgemental approach of its characters avoiding condescension and simplification
[Nicole] Kidman and [Harris] Dickinson are such a complimentary pair; both bring a blend of vulnerability and authenticity to their roles
One thing I think it excels at, in particular, is examining the complexities of female desire and the evolving dynamics of relationships and shedding light on the subtle interplay of power and vulnerability that defines them.

The Muppet Movie

jamie loftus

[

In every Muppets property, the same group of friends find each other again and that’s so beautiful to me. Gonzo always falls for Camilla. Fozzie always gets over his stage fright. Miss Piggy always decides Kermit is her husband. Kermit always falls into existential crisis. Elliot Gould is *usually* there. It’s Eternal Sunshine without all the hard parts.

Klute

Willow Maclay

[

It was the way he looked at women that I found so endearing. For many of Donald Sutherland’s romantic characters, when he observed women, he would bring out their innermost private self. He had a way of excavating the real you—the woman you kept to yourself. It was mesmerizing, intoxicating, dreamy, natural, vulnerable, terrifying, erotic. There’s a scene near the end in Klute, which takes place at a fruit market, where this element of Sutherland’s is on display, and I have rewatched it many times since I heard he passed away yesterday at the age of 88. It is where Sutherland is encased in amber in the temple of my own cinephilia, and it’s how I want to remember him.
